Visit the Prehistoric Site of Akrotiri, in which the latest excavation revealed a Minoan Bronze Age settlement with the Minoan civilization due to inscriptions in Linear A, and close similarities in artifact and fresco styles. A must-see site, also, is the Ancient Thera, an antique city on a ridge of the steep, 360 m high Messavouno mountain. It was named after the mythical ruler of the island, Theras, and was inhabited from the 9th century BCE until 726 CE.
